Shimoga is the main city of Shimoga district in the state of Karnataka. The name 'Shimoga' is derived from the term ‘Shiva-Mukha’, meaning, 'Face of Shiva'. Locally, it is called Shiva-Mogga. This place is famous for its landscapes, waterfalls and paddy fields. Shimoga district is popularly known as the ‘Rice Bowl’ of Karnataka..
The city is located 273 km southwest of Bangalore. It is bound by the districts of Davanagere to the east, Chikmagalur to the southeast, Udupi to the southwest, Haveri to the northeast, and North Canara (Uttara Kannada) to the northwest. The main rivers of Shimoga are Sharavathi, Varada, Tungabhadra and Kumudavathi, which play a main role in the production of paddy in this region.
With five major rivers flowing through the district, the Shimoga region is very fertile and is called the 'bread basket of Karnataka' and the 'rice bowl of Karnataka'. The Sahyadri range keeps the rivers well supplied with ample rainfall almost perennially.
Locals call Shimoga 'Heaven on Earth' as it offers something for everyone. It has temples, hills, lush vegetation and the famous Jog falls here is the highest waterfall in India.
 

About The Shivamoga 

History

The name of the city is derived from the term Shiva-Mukha, meaning Face of Shiva. An alternative etymology is that the name is derived from the term Sihi-Moge, meaning Sweet Pot. The district formed the southern tip of Emperor Ashoka's Mauryan Empire in third century BC. It was ruled during later centuries by the Kadambas (4th century), Chalukyas (6th century), Gangas, Rashtrakutas (8th century), Hoysalas (11th century), and the Vijayanagara rulers (fifteenth century). The city got an independent identity under the Keladi Nayaka rule during 16th century, reaching its pinnacle under the rule of Shivappa Nayaka. From the late 17th century onwards, the city was a part of the Kingdom of Mysore until the independence of India in 1947, when Mysore merged into the Republic of India.
On 1 November 2006, the government of Karnataka announced the renaming of Shimoga to Shivamogga, along with nine other cities in the state.

Geography

Shivamogga is located 13°55′18″N, 75°34′12″E. According to the Shivamogga City Municipal Corporation.,the city has a total area of about 50 km² (19.31 square miles). The climate of Shivamogga is tropical wet and dry (Koppen climate classification). This means that the winter and the early part of summer are typically dry periods. Majority of the rainfall occurs between June and early October. Shivamogga is a part of a region vernacularly known as Malnad (land of hills) in Karnataka. Most/All these hills are part of Western ghat, a region famous for plentiful rainfall and lush greenery.

Education

Shivamogga is an important center for high school and Pre-University education (classes 11th and 12th) in Karnataka, along with many other major cities in Karnataka. At present, institutes in Shivamogga for Pre-University Education are: PACE Ultramodern PU College, Vidya Bharathi PU College, D.V.S Institutes, National College, Adichunchangiri P.U. College, aurabindo p u college and DVS PU independent college.DVS Composite college.The city gains its importance in part because of lack of good institutes in other parts of the district, whereby students are forced to study their pre-university education in the city. The village of Gajanur hosts a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, or central school, which is a boarding school. Kuvempu University is located in Shivamogga at Shankarghatta.
Shivamogga also holds an Engineering College- Jawaharlal Nehru National College of Engineering [JNNCE] run by the National Education Society (NES). And Newly PES group of institutions also have started Engineering and management institute [PESITM] in city. There is Edurite College of Management for BBM and entrance exams coaching like Civil Service Exams, KAS, Bank PO, MBA Entrance, B.Ed. CET and all other competitive examinations. Shivamogga also holds the distinction of a new government medical college - Shimoga Institute of Medical Sciences which was inaugurated in 2007, and is operating henceforth. Sahyadri College is one among the four oldest colleges in Karnataka.

Art

Yakshagana a dance drama is popular in Thirthalli, Hosanagara, Sagara, Soraba regions of the district. There are many professional and amateur troupes performing the dance drama in various places across the India and the state of Karnataka. People like Hosatota Manjunatha Bagavatha who is the author of more than 160 Yakshagana prasangas actively teach Yakshagana here.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, Shivamogga had a population of 274,105. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Shivamogga has an average literacy rate of 76%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 70%. In Shivamogga, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age. Kannada is widely spoken in the city.

The Malnad region is a biodiversity hotspot with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The region has protected areas classified as wildlife sanctuaries to ensure the protection of these species:
 
Gudavi Bird Sanctuary:
Gudavi Bird Sanctuary is in Sorab Taluk. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 0.74 km2 (180 acres).This bird sanctuary is unique for many reasons but is the only sanctuary located in the midst of dense forest. Guduvi is one of the 5 famous bird sanctuaries of Karnataka. The place is 16 Kms from Soraba taluka of Shimoga district. This bird sanctuary is spread over an area of 73.68 Hectares. As per 1993 survey, it is told that 191 varieties of birds are found at this place. A natural lake and the trees gives shelter to this birds. Some important birds found are White Pebis, Stone Bill, Egret, Cormorant, Snake bird, Heron etc. Different birds immigrate from other parts of the world in different seasons for breeding. A platform is built for a closer look of birds.
 An average of about 8000 white ibis visit the sanctuary every year.
 
Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary:
Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary is in Sagar Taluk. It has evergreen and semi-evergreen forests with its eastern portion adjoining the Linganamakki reservoir.The species of flora found here: Dipterocarpus indicus; Calophyllum tomentosum; Persea macrantha; Caryota urens; Aporosa lindleyana; Calycopteris floribunda; Entada scandens; Acacia concinna; Gnetum scandens. In the semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests, common species include: Lagerstroemia microcarpa; Hopea parviflora; Dalbergia latifolia; Dillenia pentagyna; Careya arborea; Emblica officinalis; Randia; Terminalia; Vitex altissima.
The animals found here: gaurs; lion-tailed macaque; tiger; leopard (black panther); wild dog; jackal; sloth bear; spotted deer; sambar deer; barking deer; mouse deer; wild pig; common langur; bonnet macaque; Malabar giant squirrel; giant flying squirrel; porcupine; otters; pangolins. Reptiles include king cobra; python; rat snake; crocodile; monitor lizard. Avian species found here: three species of hornbill; Asian Paradise-flycatcher; Racket-tailed Drongo; Blue-throated Barbet; lories and lorikeets.

Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary
Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary lies adjacent to Shimoga town and has forests ranging from dry deciduous to semi-evergreen and is spread over an area of 395.6 km2 (152.7 sq mi). Large areas of forests have been destroyed due to fire.
Mammals in the sanctuary include tiger; leopard; wild dog; jackal; gaur; elephant; sloth bear; sambar deer; spotted deer; wild pig; common langur; bonnet macaque; common mongoose; striped-necked mongoose; porcupine; Malabar giant squirrel; giant flying squirrel; pangolin. Python; cobra; king cobra; rat snake; marsh crocodile are among the reptiles found in the sanctuary. Birds include hornbills; kingfishers; bulbuls; parakeets; doves; pigeons; kingfishers; babblers; flycatcher; munias; swallows; woodpeckers; peafowl; jungle fowl; partridges. A tiger and lion safari at Tyavarekoppa was created in the northeastern part of the sanctuary in 1988.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary
Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary was started in 1951 as Jagara valley game sanctuary covering an area of about 252 km2 (97 sq mi). It was combined with the surrounding Lakkavalli forests in 1972 and given its present name of Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. It now spans an area of 492 km2 (190 sq mi). Some of the wild animals found in this sanctuary are tiger; leopard; wild dog; jackal; elephant; gaur; sloth bear; sambar deer; spotted deer; monitor lizard; barking deer; wild boar; common langur; bonnet macaque; slender loris; the Malabar giant squirrel. Some of the bird species found here are Malabar whistling thrush; species of bulbuls; woodpeckers; hornbills; pigeons; drongos; Asian paradise flycatcher. The sanctuary has been recently adopted under a tiger-conservation project called Project Tiger which is an initiative from the Indian government.

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary
Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is a 1.14-acre (0.46 ha) sanctuary 30 kilometres (19 mi) from Shimoga town on the way to Thirthahalli. This is a small island surrounded by Tunga river. The birds found here are median egret; cormorant; darter; snakebird. The sanctuary is host to some of the most magnificent birds. The dense forest surrounding and the Tunga River prove to be a great habitat for the avian visitors. Most commonly found migratory birds in the sanctuary are the median egret, the little cormorant, and the darter. They come here during the start of monsoon and stay here till early October. There is a watchtower in the premises, which makes bird watching more convenient and frequent. The best time to visit Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary is in August, which is the peak season for migration. During this time there are more than 5000 birds in the sanctuary. To enjoy the best of beauty and treasures inside the sanctuary, take a guide along with you or ask for guidance from the Forest department.

Sakrebailu Elephant Camp
Sakrebailu Elephant Camp lies 14 km. from Shimoga town on the way to Thirthahalli. This is a training camp where elephants undergo training from mahouts.
Yes its not a joke its fact that you can find here many elephants being trained by training professionals.  Elephant from the adjoining forests bathe at this spot before they re-enter their forest abode. Every morning these majestic creatures waddle down to waters and after playfully cleansed their bodies and satiated their thirst, they leave the waters before the rays of the sun get stronger. They are off to deal with their day's routine only to return the following day.  To catch a glimpse of these mammoths at play in the waters, get there before 9 a.m.


Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari
Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari lies about 10 km (6.2 mi) from Shimoga town on the way to Sagar. The safari has lions, tigers and deer.Lion and Tiger Safari is around 11 km from city bus stand on the way to Sagar town. This place commprises of Zoo and Animals in the wild. You can see animals like Lion, Tigers (which are in plenty), and deer etc.
Tyarekoppa Lion Safari is a great place to enjoy the unaltered nature and wildlife. Tyarekoppa Lion safari was established in the year 1988. Forest department organizes safaris regularly into the deep jungles. One gets to see here lions, tigers, cheetah, bear, deer and many more magnificent animals. Bird watching is also an option in the park as there are few Migratory birds that come here during the season. The safari covers an area of 200 hectares, most of which is dense forest.

 

 

 

Waterfalls


Jog Falls:-
Jog Falls is the 11th highest waterfall in India and ranks 313 highest in the world.The river Sharavathi falls into the gorge in four distinct flows which are termed Raja, Rani, Rover, and RocketJog falls lies in Sagar taluk and is 30 km. from the city of Sagar.
 Being the highest waterfall in India,Jog falla is also one of the major tourist attraction in Karnataka.Jog Falls is formed by Sharavathi River which falls from a height of 253 m.The falls are situated at a distance of around 100km from the shimoga City.The fall comes down in four different tracks all of which have been named.Raja,Roarer,Rocket and Rani are their names.The highest of the four is the Raja which falls into 40 meter deep pool.Next to Raja is the Roarer.The name aptly describes the great spurts of water into the air,far away from the rocks.Similarly,Rani is named for its graceful flow down the rocks.After the onset of monsoon,the Jog Falls start showing its true colors.Limitless water starta flowing down from the falls giving its onlookers a surreal sight.During the dry season,when can actually take a bath in the pool,however during the wet season the falls are covered with mist rising from the fall.The best time to visit Jog Falls is during November to January months,just after the monsoons and before the start of the winters.

Kunchikal Falls
Kunchikal Falls is the highest waterfall in India and second highest in Asia with a height of 455 meters and ranks 116 in the list of highest waterfalls in the world.This waterfall is near Mastikatte and is formed by the Varahi River.

Barkana Falls
Barkana Falls is near Agumbe and 80 km from Thirthahalli town. Barkana Falls is the 10th highest waterfall in India and ranks 308 in the world.
 
Achakanya Falls
Achakanya Falls is located near a village called Aralsuruli, 10 km from Thirthahalli on the way to Hosanagara. The falls is formed by the Sharavathi river.

Vanake-Abbey Falls
Vanake-Abbey Falls is in the heart of Malnad forests, 4 km from Agumbe.
Most common name given to waterfalls around karnataka. Shimoga is also proud to have one falls called abbey falls. The falls are situated 4 Kms away from Agumbe, The sunset point in Thirthahalli Taluka. The falls are surrounded by lush green trees and natural beauty.

Hidlamane Falls
Hidlamane Falls is near Nittur in Hosanagara Taluk. The only way to reach it is by trekking.

Dabbe Falls
Dabbe Falls is located near Hosagadde in Sagar taluk. On the road from Sagar to Bhatkal, Hosagadde lies about 20 km from the town of Kargal. From Hosagadde a walk of 6–8 km into the forest leads to Dabbe Falls.

Achakanya Falls 10 Kms from Thirthahalli on the way to Hosanagar near Aralsuruli you can find this eye catching water falls. The river Sharavathi takes a spectacular leap here to form this wonderfull falls. 

Hidlamane Falls 
This falls is situated near Nittur in Hosanagar Taluka. To reach the falls you have to trek the rocky hills surrounded by dense lush trees.  Don't forget to carry your food stuff.

Dams

 
 
Linganamakki dam
Linganamakki dam is built across the Sharavathi river and is 6 km from Jog Falls.It is the main feeder reservoir for the Mahatma Gandhi hydro-electric project. It has two power generating units of 27.5 MW. The height of the dam is 1819 ft above sea level. Linganmakki dam is the main feeder reservoir for the Mahatma Gandhi Hydro Electric Power unit.

Bhadra river dam
Bhadra river dam is built across Bhadra river at Lakkavalli at distance of 20 km from Bhadravathi city. The dam was constructed by Sir. M. Vishweshwaraiah, the then chief engineer of Karnataka state. The dam mainly serves the purpose of irrigation in and around Bhadravathi taluk and Tarikere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district.

Tunga Anicut Dam
Situated around 12 Km from Shimoga, Tunga Anicut Dam is a popular choice for picnic among the locales. Boat ride in the lake is the favorite activity that tourist like to indulge in, when visiting Tunga Anicut Dam. The dam is open from 10 AM to 5 PM on all days. Just 3 Km from the dam is Sacrebyle, which is an elephant camp. The camp houses several elephants. The best time to visit the camp is early in the morning when the elephants are taken for a bath in the lake.


B.R.P Dam 
Located 28 Kms from Shimoga city near Kuvempu university. The dam is constructed across river bhadra and the height of the dam is 194 ft.  There are a number of islands created by the Bhadra river and you can enjoy the boat ride around this islands.
 
Gajanur
Gajanur dam is built across the river Tunga in a village called Gajanur 12 km from Shimoga city.

Tunga and Bhadra
Tunga and Bhadra originates at Varaha mountains. They meet at Koodli and become Tungabhadra river. Koodli is 16 km from Shimoga city and the Smartha monastery in Koodli was founded in 1576 CE by Jagadguru Narsimha Bharathi swami of Sringeri.

Ambutheertha
Ambuteertha is located 10 km from Thirthahalli on the Thirthahalli-Hosanagara road. River Sharavathi originates at this place.

Varadamoola
Varadamoola is 6 km from Sagar town. River Varada originates at this place. Varada flows through the town of Banavasi before joining Tungabhadra.

Agumbe
Agumbe is 90 km west of Shimoga city. It is known as the Chirapunji of South India. Agumbe is 830 meters above sea level. The place is famous for its sunset view.This spectacular sunset point is also known as the Cheeranapunji of south india as it receives the highest rainfall in South india. This Picturesque landscope is renowned for it's glorious Sunset.Agumbe, the 'Cheerapunji of Karnataka' gets the state's highest rainfall, is around 2 Hrs away from Shimoga, is an amazing village known for its forest resource, sunset spots, trekking passes, lakes, mountains. This one is a must see.

Kavaledurga
Kavaledurga is a fort on a hill 5,056 feet (1,541 m) above sea level.
 
Kodachadri Hill
This is the highest peak in shimoga District. kadachadri is around 120 km from shimoga this beautiful hill station is nestled in the western Ghats.
Kodachadri, A glorious and enchanting mountain provides the perfect escape from the hectic pace of the hum drum of everyday life. Paradise for trekkers, the place attracts lot of trekkers around Karnataka state. Kodachadri is situated at 1411 ft above sea level and 115 kms from shimoga city. A beatific hill abode that overlooks the panoramic Western Ghats. It is clothed with splendid evergreen forests. The first portion of the hill is very steep and difficult to ascend. On the west, the hill descends almost perpendicular for about 4026 ft, meeting the South Kanara forests that lie below. The sea appears quite close, and on clear day, you can also see the ships go by. The famous temple town of Kollur is 12 Kms away. The steep hills challenges the trekkers for a adventurous trekking experience. If you want to stay you can go to "Kalyani Chowka" in Nittur and from their to "Nisarga Dhaama". Kundadri
Kundadri is a hill near Thirthahalli. It is famous for its rock formations.On the way to Agumbe from Thirthahalli, 9 kms from Guddekeri near Begar you can find Kundadri hill. A adventurous place for trekking lovers. You can reach the hill top by tar road also but its a shaking experience if you walk up the mountain using the shortcut route. On reaching the top you can find the Parshwanath Chaityalaya, a stone structure. Kundadri hill is in fact a single gigantic monolithic rock formation with various outgrowths. A rough stone paved path leads one to the top of the hill. From the hill top you can see the twists and turns of the Thirthahalli-Agumbe road.  This place is also a jain pilgrimage centre.  Packing some light refreshments and moving on to ascend the hill would be a great idea.

Shivappa Nayaka palace and museum
Shivappa Nayaka palace and museum is in the city of Shimoga. The palace was built by Shivappa Nayaka during the 17th century CE. Kote Seetharamanjaneya temple is beside it.Situated on the banks of river tunga in the busy lanes of Shimoga city.  A good architectual piece built with rose wood. The palace is equipped with museum which has several interesting and rare archaeological collections of stone carvings and antiques of Keladi period.  Recovered idols of Hoysala and Chalukya period from the early 16th century to late 18th century are displayed here. Shivappa Nayak Palace Shivappa Naik Palace. Situated on the banks of river tunga in the busy lanes of Shimoga city.  The palace is equipped with museum which has several interesting and rare archaeological collections of stone carvings and antiques of Keladi period. St.Thomas Church
St. Thomas church, built in the 1990s and second largest church of Asia, is in the city of Shimoga. It has features of Roman and Ghothic styles of architecture.Situated in the heart of city. The church renovated and said to be second largest church in India with an area of 18000 square feet area . Also equipped with an   prayer hall with an capacity to hold 5000 people at a time.  

The Lakshminarasimha Temple
The Lakshminarasimha temple is located in the Bhadravathi city. It has been built in the Hoysala style called 'trikutachala'.

Chandragutti fort
Chandragutti fort is near Balligavi which was built by Banavasi Kadambas. The Renukamba temple is in this village.

Humcha
Humcha is a Jain pilgrimage place with a Panchakuta basadi which was built during 10th and 11th century CE.54 kms from Shimoga city is a renowned Jain Pilgrimage centre. The main attraction of Humcha is the Padmavathi Amma's temple. The Panchakuta  Basadi (Jain temple) of 10th & 11th Century and Jain Mutt are other places of interest.

Kedarshwara Temple
The Kedareshvara temple is located in Kubetoor. It has been built in the Chalukyan style.
25 Kms from Sorab is Kubetoor, has several old temples known for their architectural splendour, though now in a dilapidated condition it still exemplifies the aesthetic sense of the dynasties that reigned. The Veerabhadra and Durgi are worth a visit.  The Kedarashewara Temple is a Chalukyan architectural showpiece.

 The chaudamma / chaudeshwari temple in Sigandur in Sagara Taluk. Of note is the "launch" which is used to get across the backwaters of the Sharavathi river. This launch also transports vehicles - including cars and buses and also people.   

City Excursion

Nagara
Nagara, which was earlier called Bidarur, was the last capital of the Keladi kings and later taken by Hyder Ali during 1763. The Hyder Ali tank, Neelakanteshwara temple and Venkataramana temple are located in this city.A 16th century place situated 19 Kms from Shimoga. This was also known as "Beendanoor"in the 16th century. This place was also capital of Keladi rulers and later on was captured by Hyder Ali. Other places of interest are Shivappanaika palace, Neelakenteshwara temple, Devagana tank  and Gudde Venkataramana Swamy temple.


Keladi 
was the first capital of Keladi Nayakas. The place is 6 Kms to the north of Sagar taluka. At almost the northern end of the village, there is a large courtyard which is enclosed in modern tiled verandah. In the middle of the courtyard stand 3 temples Rameshvara temple which is in the centre, Veerbhadreshvara temple which is to the right and the Parvati temple which is to the left. The Rameshvara & Veerbhadreshvara temples are a mixed pattern of hoysala & southern or Dravidian style. The Parvati temple is a small building which has old back portion built of stone and the front modern portion built of brick.. There is also a well maintained Keladi Museum, which has a collection of copper inscriptions, palm leaves and coins from Nayaka's period.
 
Ikkeri 
situated 76 Kms to the noth of Shimoga and about 3 kms to the south of Sagar taluka. The word means "Two Streets". This place was the capital of Keladi Nayakas for some years. The walls of the city were of great extent, forming three concentric enclosures. In the citadel was the palace build of mud and timber, adorned with carvings and false guildings. The only vestige of the former greatness of ikkeri is the temple of Aghoreshvara, a large and well proportioned stone-building, constructed in a mixed style with a unique conception.

kuppalli. birth palce of renown kannada poet kuvempu (Jnanapitha award winner) . 18 kms from thirthahally. a must see place for its natural surroundings and well kept house of malnad architecture.

Talagunda
Talagunda is a village in the Shikaripura taluk. The Talagunda inscription on a stone pillar is in Prakrit language. The author of the inscription was Kubja, court poet of Shantivarman.


Honnemaradu About 25 Kms from Sagar town on the way to Jog falls ,Honnemaradu, a small town alongside a reservoir, is tucked away in the lush greenery of the Western Ghats along the Sharavati backwaters near Sagar. Encompassing an area of 50 km by 80 km, this reservoir stretches as far as the eye can see. Honnemaradu or “Golden Lake” has some of the most spectacular views of the sunrise and sunset. Deep in a forest, without the slightest trace of civilisation, Honnemaradu is a haven for die-hard outdoors fanatics as well as those who want a complete break from the City. Hiking is permitted along roads only, and boats are available with a hired guide. Honnemaradu is 8km outside of Talaguppa. Some of the water sports activities here include coracling, canoeing, kayaking and wind rafting. There are many travel groups who organizes Island camping and water sports. 
 A adventure place by name Honnemaradu welcomes the adventure loving people.   The place maintained by Adventurers, Bangalore. . On payment of small amount you get accomodation,food and water sport equipments. One important point to be noted before visiting this place is not to carry any Alcohol, Gutka, Non-Veg items. All this items are banned in this place.

Ballegavi
This histrolical place is situated 21 Kms from Shikaripura taluka. This place is also known as Dakshina Kedara was the capital of Banawasi rulers in the 12th century. The place is associated with several eminent Veershaiva saints like Allama prabhu, Akka-Mahadevi, Animishayya and Ekantada Ramayya. There are remains of many temples, shrines, mastikals, viragals and nisidigals. Some important temples are Kedareshvara temple made out of soap stone and is a fine specimen of late chalukyan type, Tripurantakeshvara temple resembling the works of belur and halebedu, Prabhudeva temple is a smaller trikutchala structure, etc..

16 Kms from Shimoga , a place where rivers Tunga and Bhadra embrace and flow together from here, hence the name Koodali. A cultural place with rich heritage and temples around. It has a noted Smartha Monastery stated to have been founded in the 16th century by Jagadguru Narsimha Bharathi Swamigalu of Sringeri. Within the premises of the matha, there are shrines of Sharadamba and Shankaracharya. Outside ,there are two temples of hoysala times dedicated to Rameshvara and Narasimha. Koodali is also known as Varanasi of the south, it is home to Rushyashrama, Brahmeshwara, Narasimha and Rameshwara temples. The 600 years old mutt of Shankaracharya still stands with inscriptions of Hoysala and Okkeri Kings.
 
Chandragutti
situated in between Soraba taluka and Siddapura. The histrolical place and pilgrimage centre of Renukamba. The place was earlier known as Chandragupta Pura, Chandragutti pete, Gutti pete.  16 Kms from Soraba taluka, 848 mtrs above mean sea level on a rocky mountain bed one can find this place.
 
 Bhadravathi 
Bhadravathi,a town in the South Indian state of Karnataka is abt 20 Kms from Shimoga. There are many buses to this place and also many taxis available. Lakshmi Narasimha temple built by Hoysalas in the 13th century is located in Bhadravathi and the Rameshwara temple built on the  banks of the river Tunga attract pilgrims from all  parts of Karnataka and other states. Pilgrims frequent here for darshans of a holy dip in the river. This beautiful Hoysala Architecture temple is currently maintained by the Archaeological Department of the Karnataka state. This temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha (incarnation of Lord Vishnu). Bhadravathi is around 20 km from Shimoga in Karnataka. Bhadravathi is also known as steel town as there is one huge steel factory called Vishweshwaraya Iron and Steel Limited (VISL), earlier known as Mysore Iron and Steel Limited. There is a Dam called Bhadra River Project(BRP) which is located 15 Kms from Bhadravathi. It is a very beautiful sunset point.
         Bhadravathi is also most prominent Industrial centre in Shimoga district. The renowned Sir M Vishweshwaraiah Iron & Steel factory, The Mysore paper Mills and Sugar Factories were harbingers of Karnataka's industrial development.
 
 Bandalike 
35 Kms to the north of Shikaripura, a place famous for basadis and temples is Bandalika. Here you can find sculptures and writtings of Rastrakutas and Kadambas period. Other places of interest are Shantinath basadi, Sahasralinga Temple and Someshwara threemurthy temples.

situated in the dense forest 50 kms from Jogfalls on the way to bhatkal. This Fort of Keladi dynasty was constructed by Kari Maneesena Rani Abbaka devi ( Spices queen).

Talagunda
5 Kms from Balligave lies Talagunda.  Several ancient inscriptions are found here. The Pranseshwara temple is a must see. To the east of Talagunda is "Prabhudeva Gaddige".

Heggadu 
8 Kms from sagar, a small village known for its Non-Government Drama training institute called NEENASAM initiated by K.V.Subanna. The institute is well equipped with an indoor auditorium known as 'Dr. Shivarama Karantha Rangamandira'. Regular workshops and training sessions, finds the place populated by renowned artists from all over the country.

The old Tunga Bridge which is more than a 100 years old was commissioned and supervised by Bharat Ratna Sir M Vishveshwaraiah.

Kudali Sangama-14 Kms from Shimoga where Tunga and Bhadra rivers merge. It also has a branch of the Sringeri Math, Chintamani Narasimha Temple, a rare Brahma temple and inscriptions on stones. There is no shade for visitors and it is also like a Land's End since two rivers are meeting, hence, even though people specifically come to this place, there is no place for them to linger on. It is called Kudali Sangama and not to be confused with Kudalasangama, as otherwise this place will show up in all searches for Kudalasangama and add to confusion.

How To Reach

By road
From the state capital Bangalore, Shivamogga can be reached on road by car or bus by taking the National Highway, NH-206 via Tumkur, Arsikere, Banavara, Kadur, Birur, Tarikere, and Bhadravathi. KSRTC, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has recently introduced Volvo buses which are a comfortable but expensive way of reaching Shivamogga from Bangalore. Shivamogga is around 274 km on road from Bangalore. By the coastal route, one can reach Shivamogga by bus / car. From Udupi, there are a number of mini-buses which take about four hours. Car journey from Udupi to Shivamogga may be around three hours. This route passes through Agumbe Ghat with sharp hairpin curves, but this road is quite popular among the tourists coming from Mangalore and Udupi. There is one more road from Kundapur, another coastal town, which takes about four and a half hours. From Sringeri (a famous tourist place, also popular among Kerala tourists and devotees), it is a four hours journey by bus. Hubli, another important city of Karnataka state is also connected to Shivamogga by road by a number of buses, and the journey is around four hours. Shivamogga is better connected with roads from all directions and as such, it is an important bus junction. All major and minor towns of Karnataka have bus access to Shimoga and its bus terminus is always busy. It is also a hub which connects Northern Karnataka to Dharmasthala.
By rail
Shivamogga has a railway station and there are frequent trains that run to Shivamogga from Bangalore and Mysore. However, direct trains to Shivamogga from other parts of India are non-existent or infrequent. Birur Junction which is well connected to most parts of India by rail (especially from Mumbai), is approximately at a distance of 70 km from Shivamogga and can be used as an alternative to reach Shivamogga. Umpteen buses run from Birur to Shivamogga. Currently under construction are railway lines connecting Shivamogga to Honnaver and Goa in the Konkan region (This is the shortest route from Bangalore to Goa). The most popular trains from Shivamogga to Bangalore are the Shivamogga Express (a daily train that leaves at 10 P.M from Shivamogga and reaches Bangalore early morning and a parallel train from Bangalore that starts at 11.40 P.M to Shivamogga) and the Inter City Express Connection train (Hubli - Bangalore) at 8.10 am from Shivamogga. Starting December 8, 2009, an Intercity express service has been introduced between Bangalore City and Shimoga, the train departs from Bangalore City at 4.30 PM and reaches Shimoga Town at 9.55 PM. The train from Shimoga town departs at 6.20 AM and reaches Bangalore City at 11.50 AM. The train runs 7 days a week.
By air
An Airport is under construction in Sogane 6 km from Shivamogga.Airports at Bangalore (275 km), Mangalore (180 km) or Hubli (195 km) can be used as transits to Shivamogga.
